> Applying Biometrics to Travel Documents - the Portuguese Experience

Date: Monday, 2 October | lundi, 2 octobre | 2ª-feira, dia 2 de Outubro

Time:  4 pm-5 pm | 16h-17h

Location:  Culturgest / Room 5

Language: English

Description:

  • [EN] Applying Biometrics to Travel Documents - the Portuguese Experience: This is a one-hour presentation and demonstration in the afternoon at Culturgest. This presentation seeks to get participants acquainted with the Portuguese project for using biometric data in travel and identity documents. The growing circulation of people generates challenges to the international community, to states, institutions and individuals when it comes to ensuring security and reduced bureaucracy at border crossings for all. New technology allows for more efficient border control, maintaining a high standard of security for everyone and protecting personal identity information. It is important to consider the implications of falsified documents produced by international networks that benefit from illegal migration and to work towards discouraging identity theft.

Description:

  • [EN] Creativity and Innovation in the Integration of Immigrants and Refugees: Partners' Contributions to the EQUAL Community Initiative: This is a half-day pre-conference workshop held in Culturgest, entitled "Creativity and Innovation in the Integration of Immigrants and Refugees: Partners' Contributions to the European EQUAL Initiative". This workshop intends to get participants familiar with the EQUAL Community Initiative, namely working in partnerships, enpowerment, equal opportunities, etc., and the way in which they have been incorporated in the projects undertaken by the Portuguese partners that deal with immigration and refugee issues. Best practices in raising young people’s awareness about diversity and interculturality, receiving and integrating asylum-seekers in the labour market, and the fight against trafficking of migrant women and victim support, will serve as the basis for reflection and discussion.

> Ethnic entrepreneurship and space appropriation

Date: Monday, 2 October | lundi, 2 octobre | 2ª-feira, dia 2 de Outubro

Time:  10 am-1 pm | 10h-13h

Location:  Off-site visit to "Martim Moniz" neighbourhood,  departure from Culturgest at 10 am

Languages: English

Description:

  • [EN] Ethnic entrepreneurship and space appropriation: A three-hour experience in the ancient, colourful neighbourhood of Martim Moniz. This walk will try to provide the participants with an overview of the presence of the “foreigner” in the central area of Lisbon, since the middle ages. The neighbourhood around Martim Moniz square, called Mouraria, was the ancient Moorish quarter of Lisbon. A walk through the neighbourhood offers a very good reading of the historical process of spatial, functional and ethnic change within the city of Lisbon. The last part of the visit will address recent urban changes as well as the dynamics associated to the establishment of several immigrant shops in the neighbourhood. The Martim Moniz/Mouraria area has the largest spatial concentration of ethnic businesses in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

> Integration and Local Politics – Lisbon, a Strategic Vision

Location:  Culturgest / Room 3

Languages: Portuguese

Description:

  • [EN] Integration and Local Politics – Lisbon, a Strategic Vision: This is a 2.5-hour pre-conference workshopt. The population structure of the city of Lisbon has suffered significant demographic changes throughout the last decade. Ethnic multiplicity is an added factor to the socio-urban dynamics of the city and, as such, cultural specificity has to be considered when defining  strategic urban development policies.

> The Migrant Woman, Deconstruction of Stereotypes

Date: Monday, 2 October | lundi, 2 octobre | 2ª-feira, dia 2 de Outubro

Time:  4:30 pm-6 pm | 16h30-18h

Location:  Culturgest / Room 4

Languages: Portuguese

Description:

  • [EN] The Migrant Woman, Deconstruction of Stereotypes: Women have always migrated, though from the mid-1980s onwards those migrating for economic reasons grew more visible. Globalisation and international commerce have added new dimensions to this phenomenon. The inclusion of migrant women in host countries’ labour markets often corresponds to a domestic unit’s survival strategy, which brings to light an emerging global social phenomenon: woman-led families.
