Territorial Strategies and Policies Research Cluster (NEST)

NEST (Territorial Strategies and Policies research cluster) brings together 8 researchers and 5 post-graduate students. The main research topics are listed below:
- Rescaling and discussion of region, place and space concepts
- Globalization and European regional change
- Knowledge dynamics and regional development
- Social innovation, creativity, and local responses
- Regional identity and local development
- Development theories and regional change in the ‘South’
- Governance models and territorial cooperation
- Methodology of territorial policy monitoring and evaluation

NEST members collaborate in different research projects funded by the European Union and participate in various international research networks. They also develop several research projects supported by the national science and technology council (FCT). Currently, NEST members' research comprise the knowledge economy and regional dynamics (EURODITE), social innovation and social and political responses in adverse milieus (KATARSIS), globalization impacts in the European regions (The Impact of globalisation and increased trade liberalisation on European Regions), Iberian markets integration (IBERMINT), public-private partnerships to regional development (Mälardal Infrastructure...), international networks and territorial cooperation of Portuguese regions (From territorial networks to territorial cooperation…).

Moreover, NEST researchers carry on with consultancy on territorial strategies and policies for government and public administration and regional bodies.

Objectives

(Re)Conceptualize region and place in a multi-scalar approach; Analyse innovation (technological and social) processes and territorial restructuring;
Identify and discuss the globalization effects in the European regions;
Analyse development changes and strategies in the ‘South’ regions and countries, especially in Africa;
Develop diagnostics and evaluation policies methodologies: processes, tools and indicators;
Study strategies of regional development and governance models and practices in the regions.
