MOPT is dedicated to theoretical and applied research on modelling, urban and regional planning. MOPT brings together an graduate and post-graduate resident researchers group in geography, urban and regional planning, spatial modelling and GIS. In the last years, MOPT researchers collaborate in various national and international research projects in different specialization areas, namely in territorial organization trends diagnosis at national and European level; elaborating urban and regional planning studies, plans and programs; elaborating developing territorial scenarios.
MOPT members collaborate in different research projects funded by the European Union and by the national science and technology council (FCT) and participate in various international research networks.
Currently, MOPT members’s research comprise the sustainable urban form (FURBS), modelling urban land use change (LUCMODEL), epidemic development process (EDEN), information society development (eATLAS).
Moreover, MOPT researchers carry on with consultancy on urban and regional planning for government and public administration.

Objectives

MOPT has as main research objectives:

- Contribution to conceptual, methodological and technical renewing on applied geography;
- Methodological spatial analysis development;
- Diagnose and discussion on territorial development trends at national and European level;
- Evaluating territorial changes due to economic reestructuration and new land and time uses;
- Developing territorial scenarios.
