Environmental Hazard and Risk Assessment and Management (RISKam)

Coordinator
José Luís Zêzere
Professor Catedrático | Full Professor

The research group on Environmental Hazard and Risk Assessment and Management includes 7 PhD Researchers, 2 PhD Students and 5 MSc Students, whose theoretical and applied research is devoted to the susceptibility, hazard and risk assessment, and risk perception evaluation, related with hazardous geomorphologic, hydrologic and climatologic phenomena. The scientific activity of the group is supported by GIS tools and spatial modelling methods. The applied research is mostly devoted to natural hazards and risk assessment, in the framework of land use planning, environmental management and emergency planning.
The scientific activity of the research group members is made not only in continental Portugal, but also in the Azores and Morocco, in the framework of scientific projects, contract research, cooperation agreements and PhD supervisions.
Main on going scientific projects are: “Soil erosion assessment in the central Rif. Case study in the Sahla oued, Morocco”, GRICES project; MAPRISK – Methodologies for assessing landslide hazard and risk applied to municipal planning (FCT, PTDC/GEO/68227/2006). Main on going contract research: Territorial Management Regional Plan for the Oeste and Vale do Tejo (PROT-OVT), Thematic Sector “Risks and Civil Protection”, Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo (CCDR-LVT); Specialized Studies on the Environmental Structure, for the revision of the Caldas da Rainha Municipal Director Plan. Main international contacts are with the CERG, European Centre on Geomorphological Hazards, Council of Europe, and the European Geosciences Union (EGU).
The research group members are supervising presently 5 PhD and 10 MSc students working on hazard and risk topics.
