Tourism, Culture and Space (TERRITUR)

The implementation of the Research Group on "Tourism, Culture and Space" aims to consolidate studies on culture, leisure and tourism, in its relation with space. It promotes a more focused and coherent research activity that have been done by different researchers from CEG - Centre for Geographical Studies. Some of the Research Group members were trendsetters in tourism geography studies in Portugal and have recently developed several academic and consultancy work on leisure and tourism planning.
Being Culture, Heritage and Tourism the main strategic guideline of the Research Group, its research activity is also linked to other CEG scientific fields, namely: Urbanism, Land Management and Planning; Resources and Environmental Sustainability; Spatial Governance, Policies and Development.
The Research Group will focus on the following three research areas, around which sub-groups may appear, with more specific objectives: i) Culture, Leisure and Sociabilities;
ii) Tourism Spaces Planning;
iii) Geodiversity, Geotourism and Geomorphological Heritage (GEOPAGE).

Objectives

Culture, Leisure and Sociabilities
- aknowledge spatialities associated with leisure, especially in urban culture contexts;
- develop basic and applied knowledge about the role of culture in spatial regeneration;
- develop studies on civic culture, social capital and associativism, in its relation with spatial identities and effects on development; Tourism Spaces Planning
- understand structuration processes and evolving dynamics of tourism spaces;
- define guidelines for management and planning of tourism spaces, in a sustainable tourism approach;
Geodiversity, Geotourism and Geomorphological Heritage
- identify, characterize and valorize the portuguese geomorphological heritage and geotouristic resources;
- promote basic and applied knowledge on structural geomorphology in its relation with geotourism.
