Urban Studies (NETURB)

Coordinator
Jorge Silva Macaísta Malheiros
Professor Associado

The NETURB team has researchers particularly interested in the study of both the urban change's dynamics (actors, processes and policies) and the local processes in their specific context and in relaton with the global trends. The main focus is cities but some studies may encompass the urban systems as well, specially when they highlight the understanding of relations between territories.
We privilege comparative studies and multi-scalar analysis without restrictions in locational terms. Portuguese cities, but also systematic and comparative analysis of Mediterranean, European, African, and Brazilian cities.
We have senior researches with important experience both in teaching and research and young researchers. We are open and strongly encourage PhD students to to their theses on our priority subjects:
- competitiveness, internationalization and new urban activities
- retail, consumption and the appropriation of urban space
- urban regeneration, public space and imagery
- socio-spatial fragmentation of urban space
- problematic neighborhoods
Besides academic projects we are also engaged in applied projects, mainly about urban policies.
